Remembering Christopher Reeve today as this week marks 44 years since the release of his film Somewhere in Time. Herb first met Reeve while shooting publicity for the film.
In 1996, following Reeve’s accident, Herb photographed him once again.

Fashionable Dogs exhibition, on view at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC, tracks the arc of popularity of several breeds through history including the Great Dane.
Fun to see Herb’s image of Kate Moss, Malibu 1994 included.
When Herb was looking for “big black and white dogs” to include in an editorial, Greg Louganis was kind enough to offer his Harlequin Great Dane.
"I remember that shoot quite well. I was told time and location with my dogs, I showed up and went to check out the layout, and of course ran right into Herb. He was a bit confused and said, “Greg I am not shooting you today.” And I said, “No not me, you are shooting my dogs.” He said, "you have big black and white dogs?” I said, “Yes, Harlequin Great Danes.” We laughed and I got the dogs out. I do remember Brutus was about 180 Lbs. and walking along the beach, he stepped on Kate’s foot, I felt so bad for her, he was a big boy. His registered name was Olympian Dane Edwin Moses, and I called him Brutus. Beautiful images Herb got that day of the two of them. He was a gentle giant, Brutus.” – @greglouganis

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, Herb would be one of the first to recognize Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics, who was a pioneer in the worldwide struggle for rights and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities. Eunice believed that if they were given the same opportunities and experiences as everyone else, they could accomplish far more than anyone ever thought possible. What began as one woman's vision evolved into a global movement that today serves more than 6 million people with intellectual disabilities in 200 countries.

Issey Miyake, the Japanese fashion designer known for his avant-garde garments blending both architectural and natural design elements, passed away.
Miyake’s designs were featured in several of Herb’s editorial spreads most notably in the April 1989 issue of LA Style magazine and included one of Herb’s most noted images “Wrapped Torso.”

Elizabeth Taylor always used her platform to shine light on the causes that needed it most. In recognition of what would have been Elizabeth Taylor's 90th birthday this weekend, it is the perfect opportunity to remember that aside from her acting, glamour and celebrity status, her true passion was her activism, notably in the fight against HIV/AIDS. #herbrittsbackstory 30 years ago today, in 1991, Herb photographs the wedding of Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Fortensky, with Michael Jackson serving as the man of honor. The photographs are sold to People magazine for a milestone price of $1Million, with the proceeds going to help establish the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation - heralding a new fundraising concept. Taylor arranged for her Trust to underwrite all operating costs so that 100% of every donation goes directly to the cause. Almost 40 years since the start of the pandemic, HIV and AIDS are still major crises, and although weve progressed regarding scientific advances around prevention and treatment, stigma has remained a powerful force.

Tina Turner’s Class Act was photographed at Eton College in the UK. At then 46 yeas old, Tina was more than happy to pop down to Eton and shatter the calm of a few prospective young English fans.
After this photoshoot, and just prior to the magazine release, Herb photographed Tina for the cover of her 1986 album Tina Turner: Break Every Rule.
Herb and Tina would go on to be dear friends for many years.

It’s Gene Kelly’s birthday today.
Little known fact, in 1986 Herb established a photography studio in Hollywood. Formerly Gene Kelly’s dance studio, the space is large and full of natural light. One can only imagine all of the creativity that came out of this space over the decades.
The studio floor, which Herb had repainted at night between sessions, today must have over 760 coats of paint on it.
The Herb Ritts Foundation still operates out of the space today.

#42 turns 75 today. In 1993 at age 46, Bill Clinton became the third-youngest president in US history.
#herbrittsbackstory Herb often had a vision of how he wanted his subjects to appear. For President Clinton, Herb wanted a black or dark gray sweater to create a silhouetted look. For over a week prior to the shoot Herb had the studio fax the White House every day, with no answer, asking if Clinton would be ok with this concept. Upon arriving the day of the shoot, President Clinton walked out with a bright green sweater purchased from a nearby thrift store and asked Herb “would this be ok?” to which the entire room erupted in laughter.

Last week, the Italian tire company Pirelli announced it would halt the production and launch of the 2021 edition of its celebrated calendar in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic. @pirelli has pledged to donate €100,000 to support "the fight against and research into coronavirus." The annual project celebrates the link between fashion, art, photography and culture. The list of collaborators who have been involved with the calendar features some of the most respected names in the industry including @herbritts
Herb was tapped to shoot the 1994 edition and again in 1999. The 1994 project featured some of his favorite subjects including @cindycrawford , @helenachristensen , @katemossagency and @iamkarenalexander on a beach in the Bahamas.
Cindy Crawford chose one of her photos from the project for the cover of her 2015 book Becoming. In an interview with @vanityfair she said: “I like this image because it kind of captures this All-American, sexy, ‘girl next door’ feeling’, and it’s [also] Herb Ritts. I felt like it’s an iconic Cindy moment.”

We can’t believe it has been 20 years since the groundbreaking 1996 retrospective, Herb Ritts WORK, which remains one of the most popular and highly attended exhibitions in Museum of Fine Arts, Boston history.
The exhibit represented quite a change for the MFA in its approach to create varied and intriguing programs and to bring in a different audience.
The Herb Ritts Foundation has given the Museum a print of every image in the 1996 exhibition, and in 2007, supported the MFA’s first gallery dedicated solely to photography.

The determination and spirit she had in her athletic career is still seen in her battle following her 2014 ATV accident and spinal paralysis. Amy, an inspiration to many spinal cord injured patients, tours the country speaking about her Foundation, Amy’s Army and her rebounds.

25 years before Coachella was playing in the desert, @herbritts was on location at El Mirage dry lakebed in California directing Janet Jackson’s Music Video “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” The video won Best Female Video and was nominated for Best Choreography and Best Art Direction at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards.
