Fashionable Dogs exhibition, on view at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC, tracks the arc of popularity of several breeds through history including the Great Dane. Fun to see Herb’s image of Kate Moss, Malibu 1994 included. When Herb was looking for “big black and white dogs” to include in an editorial, Greg Louganis was kind enough to offer his Harlequin Great Dane. "I remember that shoot quite well. I was told time and location with my dogs, I showed up and went to check out the layout, and of course ran right into Herb. He was a bit confused and said, “Greg I am not shooting you today.” And I said, “No not me, you are shooting my dogs.” He said, "you have big black and white dogs?” I said, “Yes, Harlequin Great Danes.” We laughed and I got the dogs out. I do remember Brutus was about 180 Lbs. and walking along the beach, he stepped on Kate’s foot, I felt so bad for her, he was a big boy. #herbrittsbackstory It’s Gene Kelly’s birthday today. Little known fact, in 1986 Herb established a photography studio in Hollywood. Formerly Gene Kelly’s dance studio, the space is large and full of natural light. One can only imagine all of the creativity that came out of this space over the decades. The studio floor, which Herb had repainted at night between sessions, today must have over 760 coats of paint on it. For President Clinton, Herb wanted a black or dark gray sweater to create a silhouetted look. For over a week prior to the shoot Herb had the studio fax the White House every day, with no answer, asking if Clinton would be ok with this concept. Upon arriving the day of the shoot, President Clinton walked out with a bright green sweater purchased from a nearby thrift store and asked Herb “would this be ok?” to which the entire room erupted in laughter. Last week, the Italian tire company Pirelli announced it would halt the production and launch of the 2021 edition of its celebrated calendar in light of the global COVID-19 pandemic. @pirelli has pledged to donate €100,000 to support "the fight against and research into coronavirus." The annual project celebrates the link between fashion, art, photography and culture. The list of collaborators who have been involved with the calendar features some of the most respected names in the industry including @herbritts Herb was tapped to shoot the 1994 edition and again in 1999. The 1994 project featured some of his favorite subjects including @cindycrawford , @helenachristensen , @katemossagency and @iamkarenalexander on a beach in the Bahamas. Cindy Crawford chose one of her photos from the project for the cover of her 2015 book Becoming. In an interview with @vanityfair she said: “I like this image because it kind of captures this All-American, sexy, ‘girl next door’ feeling’, and it’s [also] Herb Ritts. We can’t believe it has been 20 years since the groundbreaking 1996 retrospective, Herb Ritts​ WORK, which remains one of the most popular and highly attended exhibitions in Museum of Fine Arts, Boston​ history. The exhibit represented quite a change for the MFA in its approach to create varied and intriguing programs and to bring in a different audience. The Herb Ritts Foundation has given the Museum a print of every image in the 1996 exhibition, and in 2007, supported the MFA’s first gallery dedicated solely to photography.
